Tech I Use On the Road (GPS, iPads & Staying Connected)

Technology plays a big role in staying connected and organized while driving professionally. Two of the most important tools I use on the road are a dedicated truck GPS and an iPad for communication, ELD apps, and daily work tasks.

For GPS navigation, one of the best trucking options right now is the Garmin dezl OTR series, especially models like the OTR1020. A truck-specific GPS makes a big difference because it routes based on truck size, weight restrictions, and road limitations. That helps avoid low bridges, restricted roads, and other stressful situations that regular phone GPS apps sometimes miss. The larger screen and trucking features also make navigation easier during long trips.

Another essential tool for me is an iPad. It keeps everything in one place – dispatch communication, ELD apps, load information, emails, and even entertainment during downtime. A current-generation iPad works well for most trucking ELD systems because it’s reliable, easy to use, and has good battery life.

One important thing I’ve learned is to keep the iPad updated regularly. When the software gets outdated, some apps-especially ELD or dispatch apps can start glitching, freezing, or not working correctly. Keeping updates current helps everything run smoother and avoids unnecessary headaches on the road.

Overall, having dependable technology like a trucking GPS and well-maintained tablet helps reduce stress and keeps daily work running more smoothly. When your tech works the way it should, it lets you focus more on driving safely and less on troubleshooting devices.
